Child Abuse

September 16, 2008

Child abuse is not just a violation of the body but of the spirit and mind as well. It is a violation of the whole person. Survivors may feel an overwhelming desire to punish or get even. I wanted to see my perpetrators hurt the way they hurt me. I wanted to see life deal them just rewards.

Those feelings are normal, but I do not have to act on them. Actively seeking revenge will not help me; it only keeps me caught in the problem. I had to ask myself, “Do I want to perpetuate more abusive behavior or break the cycle of abuse?” I can hold the perpetuators accountable and responsible; however, it is not my responsibility to be judge and jury.

Very true. I, too, was abused as a child. There's nothing to gain from hatred.
