Now is the time to take the opportunity to visit the city of Orange, Texas; because one of the most visited attractions is the Shangri La Botanical Gardens and Nature Center. You can get back to the “green” nature of the gardens; being the 50th in the world to earn and receive the U.S. Green Building Council’s Platinum Certification for LEED®-NC. This is because that the, energy use, cost of the building has been reduced by 70% as well as other things; contributing to this savings are photovoltaic cells, on a southern exposure, for electricity, a deep well to take advantage of the constant temperatures 800 feet below the earth, waterless urinals, ultra low water flow toilets and low flow sinks, and 13% of the building comes from recycled materials. This and many more creative ideas have gone into the project at Shangri La Gardens and Nature Center, to make it a very eco friendly place. This is the very nature of this project.
This place was inspired from a mystical retreat within the book Lost Horizon, then it was opened to the public, after 9 years of preparation, in1946, by the creator H.J. Lutcher Stark. So from 1937 to its opening, Mr. Stark presided over every little detail to bring everything about the place into perfection. However, after a freeze that destroyed the entire flora in 1958, Mr. Stark close down the gardens; and it remained closed for 50 years. Newly reopened in 2008, I encourage you to visit the city of Orange, Texas and to visit Shangri La Botanical Gardens & Nature Center there. It is a rewarding experience that you will not forget. Have a visit and enjoy this getaway paradise. This is natural beauty in Texas and check it out in Shangri La Gardens and Nature Center.
